Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU)

SNHU is an accredited, nonprofit leader in online, competency-based education (CBE). SNHU works closely with nonprofits like ours all over the country to support students like you in completing their degree. Watch the video below to learn more about how these community partnerships work.

Master the material. Then move on.

CBE is a fast-growing alternative to the traditional lecture-based learning format or even the online virtual model. A “competency” in this context describes the intersection of a skill, knowledge, and behavior. More and more universities are adopting CBE (and the state of Texas is requiring them to do so!) because CBE rewards real-world knowledge, builds skills employers value, and makes college more accessible to adults balancing work, life, and family. In CBE, you earn your degree by demonstrating mastery of skills and knowledge, rather than spending a predetermined amount of time in a course.

With CBE you can:
  • Learn by doing

CBE is project-based. Projects can be essays, reports, and/or presentations. An SNHU faculty member will review your project to see if you’ve demonstrated mastery of the competency, which is how you earn credits in CBE. It takes 60 competencies (or credits) to earn an Associate of Arts (AA) and another 60 credits to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA).

  • Accelerate your progress

There’s no cap on the number of credits you can earn in a term, so if the material comes easily to you and/or if you’re able to put in more time, you can earn more competencies/credits that term. The cost per term is a flat fee, so you’ll pay the same tuition price even if you accelerate and earn more credits.

  • Make your own weekly schedule

There are no lectures to attend, on-site exams, or online participation required at a specific time, so you can do coursework any day or time of the week that works for you. You can also meet with your coach any time that works for you—in fact, part of how we pair you with your coach is by checking for a good schedule fit. We find students need 10-12 hours a week, on average, for schoolwork. Your coach will help you build study habits, stay on track, and navigate challenges.

A college degree is just the beginning

Not every pathway is linear, and we recognize and support our students in achieving what matters to them. SNHU is an accredited, nonprofit university; our graduates often continue their education, or go on to exciting careers with higher earning potential.

  • AA to BA with Degree Partners and SNHU

Earning your AA with SNHU puts you halfway to a bachelor’s degree. Many students go on to complete their BA at SNHU with Degree Partners coaching support.

  • AA to Bachelor’s at another university

Once you earn your Associate of Arts, you can also continue on to a bachelor’s degree at another institution. This is a great fit for students looking for a specific bachelor’s degree that SNHU doesn’t offer through its CBE program. Your coach can help you prepare your transcript and any required documentation to take the next step.

  • BA to Master’s at SNHU or another university

Some of our graduates go on to earn a master’s degree at SNHU, through their global campus, or at another institution. Degree Partners does not offer coaching through a master’s degree, however, your coach can help you prepare your transcript and any required documentation to take the next step.

  • AA or BA + industry-specific credentials

A college degree is highly valuable in the job market, and a solid foundation upon which you can layer industry-specific certifications. For example, you can earn a generalized Bachelor of Arts, then go on to earn a teaching certification.

Amanda McChesney

“For 7 years, I taught pre-K, watching others step into opportunities I was more than capable of taking on. I wanted more: for myself, for my family, and especially for my 2 children. Since completing my degree, I’ve finished my first year as a lead teacher and stepped into a new role as the Grade 2 lead. In this position, I have the opportunity to work closely with the lead team, support parents, and mentor my peers.”

Jazzmen Wilken

“I have my eyes on my master’s degree, I’m doing my sign language degree. It shows my children that not only do you go through high school, but there’s further schooling that helps you with career opportunities, helps you learn more—all of the skills I may need later on.”

“I had never heard of a competency-based program before, and after speaking with Degree Partners staff, I was sure that this was the program for me. I am a full-time worker, family man, adventurer and traveler. So I wanted a program that was as flexible as could be. I have been able to work and go to school, both full time, all the while raising my son and also trying to be the best husband I can be.”
